MyMac Podcast 622: Once more into the Breach

mymac622
So there was this Apple event that Gaz and Guy feel obligated to talk about. Guy goes full Sierra, Gaz has his first game, and we all learn about Squirkles. Lots of feedback, an iTunes review and (GASP!) a Skype phone call.

Guy’s App Pick: Tracktion 5 free.
Gaz’s App Pick: INKS £1.49

People’s Pick: Gary Apter writing from email recommends Noizio by Kyrylo Kovalin! $4.99 from the Mac App Store. Noizio is an app that will drown out the noise of the street and allow you to concentrate on the work at hand, increasing your productivity. On the other hand, it can also set the mood for a romantic evening or lull you to sleep, ensuring that you will dream soundly all night long. An ambient sound equalizer app for creating a mixture of ambient sounds available for Mac OS X.

MyMac Podcast 621: What’s Old is New Again

mymac621
Gaza is back but about 3 seconds slower than usual. After taking a day off to wait for his ISP to get their heads out of their posterior, they talk a bit about the upcoming Apple event and whether or not an old Mac may fit your life better than a new one.

Guy’s App Pick: Macs don’t get viruses right? Probably, but we can get malware and other pesky bits that can be annoying and dangerous. So what to do? Well, Malwarebytes for the Mac can help with that. It’s fast, free, doesn’t run all the time eating up resources and seems to do just what it says. Remember though as I said, it doesn’t run all the time which means you have to initiate it.
Gaz’s App Pick:  $4.95 single-user license $9.95 family pack AudioBookBuilder
People’s Pick: Nicholas Riley WEQ4U – a UK centric iPhone app that does what it says on the tin!

You use the app to ring call centres (usually 0345 numbers) and once you are put on hold you dial 9* and WEQ4U rings off. You leave the app open which re-establishes a connection once an agent answers your call. The display shows how long you are queuing and tells you it is connecting you by changing the display.

Best of all – you are only using your normal phone allowance and not paying a premium rate to whoever you are calling.

Best app I’ve downloaded in ages

MyMac Podcast 620: Why all the delay?

mymac620
Gaz is off doing stuff, so Guy bribed…coerced…threatened…invited (yeah that’s the word) Karl Madden and Mark Chappell from the Essential Mac and Mac and Forth podcasts to come on. Just so he wouldn’t feel UK deprived you know. The main topic being why Apple has held off on updated Macs for so long and various conspiracies behind it. Most of which is probably not true…probably.\

MyMac Podcast 617: Service with a Smile

mymac617
So after the iPhone, what do you think is the number two money generator for Apple? Macs? iPads? The Apple Watch (yeah right!). Nope, believe it not, it’s Apple’s services including iTunes, iCloud, and many others. The Gmen explore this a bit before losing track of what it was they were talking about.

Guy’s App Pick: AUM Audio Mixer from Kymatica $18.99 from the iOS App Store. If you do a lot of audio on your iOS devices, then this is an app you should probably use. Compatible with Inter-App Audio, Audiobus, and many other audio related programs, AUM takes them all and routes them where you want them. Kind of like Audio Hijack on the Mac, but to be honest incapable of all that app can do because of Apple’s iOS limitations. Also does not work with Skype which is unfortunate.
Gaz’s App Pick: Two picks ones and App and one’s a USB Desk Fan.

Smash Hit a game where you throw Ball Bearings at objects to complete the course. Quite addictive and FREE to try but I soon unlocked the premium version with an in App purchase of £1.49, which is how it should be 🙂

The desk fan has 2 speeds the lower speed pushes enough of a breeze across you and is pretty quiet, not silent but not bad.

There are in App purchases for more backing tracks @ 0.79p each there is also a Classic version at £1.49 Version I haven’t checked that one out yet though. Standard (with In App purchases) Classic Version

mymac612
Mark Chappell of the Essential Apple Podcast (https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-essential-apple-show/id983364510?mt=2) joins Gaz and Guy for a little more than a hour of confusion. This may be the first time they’ve actually recorded more “not in the show” than “show”! They go all over the map about Siri on the Mac, on the iPhone, and on the AppleTV. Fun, fun!

Gaz’s App Pick: Still use for photo’s (not to write comics) and I still like this App, ComicLife, a different way to put a photo set together. £22.99 or there is an upgrade price £17.50 if you have a previous version, but that’s from the website only, but they do give you a multiple users option
Mark’s App Pick: Workflow $2.99 £2.29

MyMac Podcast 611: Update Upgrade

mymac611
The old question pops up again. Is it better to update your Mac for a new (or newer) one or upgrade your existing one? Apple seems to be making that choice easier these days but in an odd way. Many Macs just simply can’t be upgraded at all. The Gmen talk about this serious question, but in their own way. So that means the question remains.

MyMac Podcast 610: So how did we do?

mymac610
No short show this week, but the center section is filled with WWDC goodness as LIVE right from event, Guy recorded a conversation with Mac to the Future (It’s on FaceBook) Warren Sklar! Also in the first section Guy and Gaz give their own takes on Apple’s latest developmentally goodness. So, long show then.

Guy’s App Pick: Picked this before but I’m apparently on a movie editing app kick at the moment. Camtasia 2 by TechSmith $99.99 on the Mac App Store. Not only a great presentation and screen capturing tool, it’s also really good as a multitrack movie editor.

Gaz’s App Pick: Not an IOS App, not MAC OS App it’s a movie, well not a movie an interview Steve Jobs the lost interview, this popped up in my Netflix selection, I hadn’t seen it so I watched it, what I like if no cheering crowds, no silly background music, not audience clapping at the end of every section, just the interview, with a little bit of added comments, I enjoyed it.
It’s on YouTube but you may also find it in Netflix.

MyMac Podcast 609: WW…TGMD

mymac609
Two weeks in a row and the GMen manage to get another show out under an hour. Is it kismet? Fate? A lucid and tight conversation between two professionals who know EXACTLY what they’re talking about? You’re kidding right? They do all the usual stuff and give some thought (HA!) to the upcoming WWDC, because that’s what Apple podcasts are supposed to do.

Guy’s App Pick: As much as I complained about intrusive and privacy reducing services last week, Amazon has one that’s really nifty for aspiring screenwriters with not much money (which can probably be said of ALL aspiring screenwriters). Amazon’s Storywriter cloud writing app has many features including built in elements for the different parts of your story. It keeps track of your characters and auto fills them in as you create them. Certainly not as fully featured as stand-alone applications, but for getting your feet wet it’s great. You can also submit your screenplay to Amazon for consideration for…something, since they now make their own content as well.
Gaz’s App Pick: The way in app purchases work Ripple Training, do some free lessons for you to test their full package before buying all or some of the lessons this is the way in apps work well.

mymac607

Guy’s App Pick: Lightworks by EditShare. A nearly fully featured non-linear video editor that has a quirky interface and some similarities to Final Cut Pro for free? How is it possible? Well they give you some, but not all of the potential features and hold some back like user-defined project locations, sharing, advanced hardware support, and the pro version includes some pretty cool Boris FX stuff, and only exports to MPEG-4. All this is to naturally entice you to their subscription-based (hate this trend in software) Pro version.

Gaz’s App Pick
: Live Face Filters MSQRD

People’s Pick: Want to measure how big something is on your Mac screen, in pixels? Press Cmd-Shift-4 to start a partial screen capture. The mouse pointer turns into a cross-hair and shows its current screen coordinate. Move to one corner of the part of you screen you want to measure, then drag to the opposite corner. The pointer shows you the dimensions of the box in pixels. If your start position was a little off, hold down the spacebar while continuing to drag to move the first corner. To cancel, press Escape before letting go of the drag, or just let go of the drag to capture a PNG image of the area.
